August 9, 2010

Hi family!  Great to hear from you! My greatest joy comes from my family, hands down! Don't be mad at my companion.  We are just different people and the more patient I am, the more she opens up and I find out why she thinks the way she does.  And I kind of just have to wait for the "opportune moment" to give correction.  There are sometimes that she won't take correction no matter what it is but other times she's a lot more receptive.  I kind of rebelled this week, silently.  We were sitting in a meeting and I had my hair down, parted the way she did it and not behind my ears and I was wondering why I was doing that.  It wasn't comfortable.  So I just tucked my hair behind my ears.  It probably sounds funny but it felt like a big step.  She either didn't notice or didn't say anything.  She does have some good advice.  She recommended different shampoo and it has made my hair really soft.  She also has this kind of dryer that's kind of like a dryer and a brush combined so all you do is brush your hair until it's dry and it straightens your hair at the same time.  I tried it and it worked really well.  I might get one myself.  (Maybe that could be my birthday present.  I'll just get it here.)  I love you all so much and I'm so incredibly thankful for your prayers and support.  Mom, I'm so glad you're feeling better!  I'll be praying about your surgery.

Hi everybody!  This was a good week.
I love it here!  People give us peaches and grapes grown in their backyards.  When they have extra, they bring it to church and say to everyone that it's in the kitchen and they can take some.  A lot of people make homemade juice.  They just put fresh fruit and water in a blender and make juice.  I like the watermelon and strawberry juice that we've had.
We had a family home evening with a less-active family.  Their 15 year old daughter gave the lesson for her first time.  It was great.  She wanted to teach about suffering and why it happens.  We helped her prepare it.  The conclusion she came to was that it helps us to learn how to rely on God and it allows us to be able to relate to others who may be going through the same trial.  So when we're going through something hard, there is a reason and we can still be happy and have hope.  They also played a really fun game.  One person went out of the room but within earshot.  Another person takes a broomstick and points to people saying "escobita, escobita, ..., ESCOBA"  (little broom, little broom, broom).  When the person hears "escoba" they come in and try and guess who was pointed to last.
If you don't love everyone on your mission, you're not doing it right.
We're helping teach a sister in the ward English.  It's fun and she's really sweet.  She called me "Hermana Nice" because she thinks I'm very nice.  She has a 4 year old granddaughter who really likes us.  I LOVE little kids.  While we were waiting to teach a lesson at the church, there was a family there and one of their little girls was in a bad mood so I brought out pictures and taught her a little lesson.  I had my testimony glove out.  It has a picture on each finger representing Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, The Church, and the prophet today (Thomas S. Monson).  It's the basic things we need to have a testimony of. How Heavenly Father is our...well...father in heaven and He sent His son Jesus Chris to suffer and die for us.  Joseph Smith was a prophet called by God to restore the true church on the earth and we have a living prophet today.  Well, I was showing this little girl and going through the pictures.  This is how part of the conversation went:

Me: Who's that?
girl: Jesus!
Me: What's important to know about Him?
girl: He takes care of us!
Me:  That's Joseph Smith.  He was a prophet.  Who does a prophet talk to?
girl:  Him and Him!  (pointing to the pictures of Heavenly Father and Jesus)

Children know.  They are so innocent and pure.  They are teachable.  That is why we are told we need to become as little children. Not childish but childlike.
I read Mosiah 4 this morning.  I love this chapter.  It's weird how remembering your own nothingness can give you such great joy.  I guess it's your attitude after you remember your nothingness.  If you feel you are nothing and turn to the world, you will never be happy.  That is still pride because you're putting something about the Lord.  If you remember your nothingness and turn to the Lord, He blesses you and sends His Spirit which fills you with joy.  This joy is what people generally look for in the wrong places. It is an eternal joy that will never fade away.  I know it is only through Jesus Christ that we can even hope to have this joy.  I love being a missionary and I love telling people about this.  I know the church is true!  The Book of Mormon is the word of God along with the Bible.  We have a living prophet today.  Families can be together forever!
              Have a great week!
